AvgonimaAvgonima

Avgonima is a village in Chios 16Km from the town center and is located to the west side of the island on the road going to Anavatos.

Amantos Ο Άμαντος explains the name, based on the type Avgonimata (Αυγωνήματα) (a place between Avgonima and Anavatos) which means cheap land fields. Avgonimata is for Zolotas the plural, based on the usage of the language by the Chians, of Evonima (Ευώνυμα) in a similar fashion like prosopata is for prosopo for Chians (προσώπατα, πρόσωπο).

The Village is perhaps the oldest before the middle ages. The Priest Ioustinianis talks about Avgonima as the entrenched Castle as well as others. According to the tradition the village was destroyed by the pirates.

Elinda > Alinta > Alous > Alounta > Eleounta, a natural and leeward bay west of the village has shown signs to the archaeologists from the roman empire era (Prehistoric Emborio and Agio Gala of Sinclair Hood, 1938-1955).
